Imelda Hospital takes its IT infrastructure to a higher level

Because its traditional infrastructure no longer met the needs of a hyper-connected world, Imelda Hospital, on the advice of AXI, turned to HPE Synergy, HPE's HPE Composable Infrastructure platform. HPE Synergy is the first composable infrastructure platform designed from the ground up for both traditional and cloud-native applications. Within the hospital, HPE Synergy technology, software, and services are used to build an ultra-responsive IT infrastructure that accelerates application delivery.

Imelda Hospital wants to be able to respond quickly to changing organizational guidelines and requirements. Numerous new versions of hospital applications are released annually, which must be made available to the medical and nursing staff as quickly as possible. Because the IT infrastructure had grown into a complex environment over the years, this proved to be a difficult task. Moreover, the infrastructure's storage, computing, and network capacity were designed based on a siloed approach, prioritizing the optimization of specific workloads rather than the delivery of applications and services.

"Imelda Hospital wanted to address all these shortcomings," explains Chris Thoen, IT Manager at Imelda Hospital. "Because management was siloed, there was no uniform management platform for the entire infrastructure. It was impossible to visualize the interrelationships between all IT components. There was manual coordination, long wait times for changes, failed implementations, and an increased risk of disruption."

Developing an Application-Focused IT Infrastructure

"Because our traditional infrastructure no longer met the needs of a hyper-connected world, we, on the advice of AXI, switched to HPE Synergy, the HPE Composable Infrastructure platform," continues Chris Thoen. "We made this choice because HPE Synergy is the first composable infrastructure platform designed from the ground up for both traditional and cloud-native applications. Within our hospital, we will use HPE Synergy technology, software, and services to build an ultra-responsive IT infrastructure that accelerates application delivery." "

In order to develop a composable infrastructure with HPE Synergy, Imelda Hospital has invested in HPE Synergy frames and compute modules. The HPE Synergy 12000 Frame is a 10U frame that fits in standard racks and is designed for current and future generations of compute, storage, network, and management modules.

The Compute Modules perfectly meet Imelda Hospital's needs. Mission-critical workloads can be configured almost instantly and easily reassembled if necessary.

By using the HPE Composable Infrastructure Unified API, the hospital gains the ability to create code to manage the compute, storage, and network infrastructure. With a single line of code, for example, it is possible to instruct HPE Synergy to automatically scale up. This task no longer needs to be performed by the IT administrator, freeing them up for other tasks.

"Unified API saves us a lot of time," says Kim Buts, Hardware & Network Manager at Imelda Hospital. We no longer have to manually configure servers, storage, and network components. This allows us to quickly deliver the requested application services throughout their entire lifecycle.

"We've had a strong relationship with AXI for years. We were perfectly supported with well-considered advice during this extensive renovation project. AXI also helped us with the trade-in of existing equipment and the financing through HPE Financial Services. All of this was combined with fair pricing."

Selecting HPE Synergy Composable Storage with the use of 3PAR

A pool of flexible storage capacity was built to complement the expansion of a Composable Infrastructure. "After an extensive and in-depth study conducted in mid-2017, the HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8400 was chosen," explains Buts. "By choosing the HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8400 storage solution, Imelda Hospital can consolidate its storage environment on an enterprise-class flash array."

By using SSDs, the 3PAR storage solution boosts performance. The system is easily scalable and offers significant flexibility, all-flash array performance, and high density. Furthermore, the 3PAR offers all the necessary data services, the use of spinning media, the robustness of four nodes, seamless data mobility between systems, and high availability thanks to a complete suite of persistent technologies.
